PARKSVILLE — Oceanside RCMP believe mental instability and excessive drug use were factors behind a man using a machete to terrorize people in Parksville.
Police said the 44-year-old man broke into an Allsbrook Rd. area home Thursday morning armed with the large weapon where a mother and her two young children were inside. Police said the startled family took off, while the suspect smashed items and jumped on the roof before he was arrested.
Prior to the alleged home invasion, police say the accused broke into and severely damaged a travel trailer.
The suspect is also accused of initially walking into an Allsbrook Rd. business, reportedly acting crazy and allegedly smashing the machete on the counter.
Police said the suspect is not known to anybody he encountered during the events which unfolded around 10:30 a.m.
The man will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and will be held on several charges, according to police.
