NANAIMO — A man charged with violently attacking another man on a Nanaimo sidewalk last fall will spend more time behind bars.
Brent Giles George Houle, 45, was sentenced for aggravated assault in B.C. provincial court on Friday, May 16, and handed a further 466 days in jail (15 months and nine days) for the vicious Oct. 8, 2024, assault.
He received credit for time served, shaving considerable time off his two-year provincial jail sentence after pleading guilty to the offence.
Police say around 10:30 a.m. that morning, a man, believed to be unhoused, was attacked by Houle in the 100 block of Nicol St. outside a tattoo studio, causing serious injuries to the victim.
Houle ran off towards downtown, with eyewitness accounts and video surveillance footage aiding in identifying him.
Houle has been in custody since November 2024 after being detained on an unrelated trespassing investigation and charged in relation to this incident.
Houle has an extensive criminal record dating back almost two decades, including multiple possession for the purpose of trafficking convictions, possessing stolen items, assault, and driving while prohibited.
He will also serve a year of probation following his release and has a lifetime firearms ban.
