NANAIMO — With the temperatures falling, Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) has tips to reduce fire risk as people spend more time indoors.
NFR assistant chief Troy Libbus said their department occasionally responds to heating-related fires this time of year, which he said can be easily preventable.
“With the weather changing, and we’re all going inside, and we want it nice and cozy with our fireplaces and maybe have some candles going, it’s so important to always never leave this stuff unattended.”
Libbus said if candles are being used, ensure they are in a sturdy holder.
He recommends using battery-operated candles for a light source as a safer alternative.
As for keeping warm, NFR recommends that only certified space heaters plugged directly into the wall are used, which should only be operated away from combustibles.
While woodstoves are less commonly used in urban settings, Libbus said the traditional heat source causes occasional structure fires in Nanaimo.
He said only certified wood stoves should be used.
“Make sure you can have a fireplace that is safe for you and safe for your community,” Libbus said. “Having your annual cleaning of your chimney by a certified company is also very important.”
Only dry, clean wood should be used, while NFR suggests not to overfill a fireplace with wood, and don’t let it smoulder overnight.
