NANAIMO — Emergency crews have recovered a body from Nanaimo’s Long Lake.
A person walking around the lake made the discovery mid-morning on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the south end of the lake off Victoria Ave., with first responders including a marine unit from Nanaimo Fire Rescue tasked with retrieving the individual.
Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said the body was around 40 metres off shore, floating in the water, near the Loudon Park boathouse.
“The walker saw what they thought was a body in the lake, they contacted us and we attended to the scene,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We confirmed [it was a body] and we contacted Fire Rescue.”
Fire Rescue crews were on scene by 11:10 a.m. with a boat in the water by 11:25 a.m.
Crews returned to shore with the body around 20 minutes later.
Officers from the scene said they don’t believe there is anything suspicious about the death, however an investigation involving the BC Coroners Service continues.
Nanaimo RCMP are working to identify the individual and notify next of kin.
