NANAIMO — Significant closures apply for most of May for all road users beginning on Monday, May 5 on Northfield Rd. between Bowen and Boxwood roads.
Crews conducting significant road surfacing work and other enhancements is leading to no westbound movement on Northfield toward the Nanaimo Parkway through May 11.
The City of Nanaimo states there will also be no left turns from Northfield Rd. onto Bowen Rd.
The disruptions are in place 24-hours a day, while detour signage is in place, with Boxwood and Meredith roads slated to handle additional traffic for the next few weeks.

Bill Sims, the City’s general manager of engineering and public works, suggests motorists avoid the area if possible.
“The month of May is going to be very disruptive because Northfield will be closed intermittently over the period of three weeks. We will be open for the May long weekend, that’s going to be about the last of the major closures.”
Sims expects less disruptive closures will follow on Northfield Rd. west of the Bowen Rd. Intersection for sidewalk, gutter work and landscaping.
“We believe by before the fall everything will be done and ready to go,” Sims told NanaimoNewsNOW.
Sims said the Bowen Rd./Northfield Rd. junction is the busiest City-controled intersection.

A City-led initiative, known as the Midtown Gateway Project, is nearing the finish line of an extensive, multi-year effort, with the primary aim of establishing more capacity to take pressure off Bowen/Northfield Rd.
A new traffic signal just north of the intersection opened in late January.
A newly opened multi-use pathway on Boxwood Rd. connects to an asphalt path located between Boxwood Rd. and the Nanaimo Parkway which extends to near East Wellington Rd.
