NANAIMO — A coordinated effort from multiple agencies helped locate a missing fisherman earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Oct. 20, around 7:30 p.m., Nanaimo RCMP received a call from the family of a 75-year-old man who had not returned home after going fishing that morning in the Nanaimo Lakes area, according to a release.
Family and friends searched the area they believed he was in, but became more concerned when they were unable to locate him.
Police went to Nanaimo Lakes and found the man’s vehicle and empty boat trailer, and immediately began treating the situation as a high-risk missing person investigation, due to the man’s age, medical condition, and the length of time he was overdue.
Nanaimo Search and Rescue (NSAR) was called, sending out around 25 volunteers, boats, and other specialized search resources.
Around 10:15 p.m. that evening, the man was located in medical distress, standing in the water near his capsized boat.
Medical care was provided on scene before he was transferred to the hospital by BC Emergency Health Services.
NSAR president Carly Trobridge said this incident shows the importance of a rapid, coordinated response when someone goes missing in a remote area.
“Our volunteers train year-round and are ready to respond at a moment’s notice. We’re grateful this search had a positive outcome and are proud of the dedication shown by the many volunteers who gave their evening to help bring someone home safely.”
